Four simple steps for selecting the right projection screen
Selecting the right projection screen step-by-step
Projecta offers many types of projection screens in various aspect ratios and screen surfaces. Although we are always ready to assist you when you need a projection screen for your installation, here are some simple steps to help you navigate through our extensive range.
1. Room size > size of the projection screen
Take a good look at the dimensions of the room to determine the size of the projection screen. The limitations of the room and the position of the audience determine the size of the projection screen.
Fit the screen to the audience, not to the projector.
The height of the projection screen should be approximately equal to 1/6th of the distance from the screen to the last row of seats. This is to ensure that everyone in the audience can read text and see the detail in the projected image. Ideally, the first row of seats should be approximately 1.5 times the screen height away for professional applications. For home cinema applications, this is twice the height. The bottom of the of the screen should be about 125 cm above the floor in professional applications to ensure that people in the last row can comfortably see the projected image. For home cinema installations the bottom of the screen should be between 60 and 90 cm above the floor. Although these ground rules will give you a good indication of the ideal size, you also have to take the height of the ceiling into account. Often the height of the ceiling limits your maximum screen height.
For a correct and ergonomic positioning of the projection screen it may be required to have an extended black border above the viewing are. Our Black Drop Calculator on the Projecta website can assist you with this calculation.
2. Application > aspect ratio
The aspect ratio of the projector should be same as the projection screen to ensure the projected image fits the black border surrounding the viewing area. These black borders serve to increase the perceived contrast of the projected image and frame the image. Common aspect ratios include:
4:3 (Video Format) – Presentations: This used to be the standard TV and computer format.
16:10 (Wide Format) – Presentations: This is the current computer format and thus the logical format for professional presentation applications.
16:9 (HDTV) – Movies: This is the current TV format.
2.35:1 (Cinemascope) – Movies: This is an aspect ratio close to the format of most DVDs.
1:1 (Square) – Overhead projection: This is an old format for overhead projectors but remains frequently misused with current projectors.

3. Environment and projector > projection surface
The selection of the ideal projection surface is based on the content of the projector, the position and performance of the projector, the level of ambient light and the application. These variables need to be tuned to each other in order to create the optimum projected image. The projection surface is by far the most important element in the selection of a projection screen. In our wide range of projection surfaces you can select projection surfaces with a higher gain to counter ambient light or a low output projector (for example: Pearlescent, High Power® and Datalux). You can also select a projection surface that will give your projection deeper black levels or when the projected image needs a boost in contrast (for example: High Contrast Cinema Vision and High Contrast). For rear projection applications we also have several projection surfaces (for example: Da-Tex®, Dual Vision and Ultra Wide Angle). If you are projecting with stereoscopic passive 3D we suggest specifying 3D Virtual Grey (front projection) or 3D Virtual Black® (rear projection). Both offer 99% polarization retention.
For the most demanding installations where a high level of detail is necessary we strongly recommend using a tensioned projection surface. A tensioned projection surface is perfectly flat and is able to display the high level of detail which is necessary in medical and design applications. If you use a short throw or ultra short throw lens, we recommend to use a tensioned projection surface because of the extreme angle the light reaches the projection surface. The following surfaces are available as tensioned: Matte White, Pearlescent, High Contrast Cinema Vision, High Contrast Cinema Vision Sound, Da-Tex®, Dual Vision, Ultra Wide Angle, 3D Virtual Grey and 3D Virtual Black®.

4. Your demands > The type of projection screen you need
Lastly, you have to decide on the type of projection screen which is required for your installation. You can choose from the following types of projection screens:
- Ceiling recessed motorised projection screens
- Wall or ceiling mounted projection surfaces
(Motorised or manually operated)
- Fixed frame projection screens
- Rigid rear projection screens
- Fast-Fold® screens with optional drapery
- Portable and tripod projection screens
